Happy Birthday David, Aria and Levi!!

Here is a picture of each of my babies at the time they were born last year:

David, 3:02 pm

Aria, 3:02 pm

Levi, 3:03 pm

Here is what Levi thought of my attempt to get a smile out of him. He went in to "camera mode" and banished all smiling. If he could roll his eyes at me, I am sure he would!

And, if I had even an ounce of vanity left, you would not be seeing these pictures.

We had a wonderful birthday day today. (That's a lot of days in that sentence!) It started out with me singing "Happy Birthday" to each of my babies as I fed them their morning bottle. We played and had a nap. After lunch, Shari and Kara Kooiker came and took the kids on a walk in their stroller. From what I hear, they toured the town! They went with Kara to see her get her hair cut and were given some candy. Then they stopped by the bank and got stickers. Ironically, I believe they ate the stickers, but not the candy! Shari wasn't sure I would allow them to have the candy so we'll eat it tomorrow... when we are at the pool!!! Yay! Back to today... after the bank, I believe David, Aria and Levi got a glimpse of the fantastic pool we will be going to tomorrow. They seemed excited and I am sure it looked fun. The Kooikers didn't quite make it back to the house before I had to go find them, because I wanted to see my babies at 3:02-3:03! I know, I am a nut. But, a year ago today my precious babies where brought into this world. I didn't get to hold them or hardly touch them those first minutes of life, so I wanted to be holding them this year! So, at about 2:50, I drove off in the truck to get my one year olds! They were happy to see me anyway because it was getting hot and David had just drifted off into a deep sleep as I found them. Here is a picture of the way he fell asleep watching the stroller wheel:

Aria was tanning herself and quite relaxed on the stroller ride. She is definitely my daughter, as her feet are constantly propped up on whatever is in front of her. Right before this picture was snapped, she put one leg down.

So, I got my pictures with my babies. David was put down for a nap and the others soon followed. Dan and I fed them dinner and we had a nice meal all together. It was wonderful that they could eat what I made for us all and we could dine as a family. Here are some pictures of my one-year-olds at dinner time. They were all being quite silly.

After dinner, we took them out for dessert! We went to a local burger/ice cream joint called Slade's, and bought them their first strawberry soft-serve ice cream. They loved it. I loved it and we all ate lots of sugar just before bedtime! Yay! Oh, and I forgot to mention how we got there... on their birthday present from us! We got them a new bike trailer and a seat for Dan's bike, so he can take all three of them out for rides. I can either tag along, or choose to stay home! It's awesome! They LOVE the trailer. To ride in the seat, they have to wear a helmet. David won't have anything to do with his helmet, so Levi and Aria trade out in the seat. Here are some pictures from their first test drive on Monday:

Since we were full of sugar and not ready for bed yet, we decided they deserved one last hooray for their birthday. We took them to the park and played on the swings for a while. The evening concluded with baths and a new bedtime routine.

We have been getting them into pajamas and feeding them bottles down in the livingroom. Well, they always sensed it was bedtime and rebelled. They wouldn't eat and wanted to get down and play with toys. Tonight, we started something new. At bathtime, we brought all evening supplies upstairs, only had the lamp on and got them ready for bed in their room. There are no toys in their room. We did bottles up there, sang songs, read a story, said our prayers and laid down for bed. Levi and Aria went right to sleep. Aria actually got laid down in the pack 'n play in our room because she and David get each other riled up. David had to fuss for 15 minutes before realizing Mommy wasn't coming to rock him tonight. I have been guilty of trying to settle him down too much lately. I am always eager to get everyone asleep and was afraid he was disturbing the other two. Tonight, with the new routine, comes a new resolve to get David putting himself to sleep at night. We put a fan in Levi's room to quiet David's noise. This week David's crying has woken up Levi and he gets MAD! If he is woken up after he's down for the night you can expect a 10 minute sobbing fit. Well, no more! We are tackling this problem for good! I am hoping each night gets easier and better. I am looking forward to a nice routine and hopefully finding some success in a Mommy idea! I gave myself an annual review last night and set out some goals. Ha ha. Well, someone has to do it!

Well, blog readers, thanks for sticking with us this year. It has been an awesome year full of lots of love and learning. Thank you for reading this and inspiring me to continue journaling for my children. I hope they will enjoy this record in future years and I know I will always treasure it. Here is to many more adventures in the lives of the Nebelsicks!

Love, Elizabeth

P.S. - More party pictures coming soon and other great stories of our crazy kids!

One Year!!

Our babies are going to be ONE on Thursday! Everyone has been asking me if I can believe a year has passed already. Honestly, sometimes it feels like they were born about three years ago. Other times it seems like they've always been here and I don't remember "before" them. In other ways, this year went entirely too fast.

I am celebrating the success of getting through this year and having it go so much better than I imagined at times. We had SOOO much help and a year ago today, I would not have guessed how MUCH we would have needed the help. I do not think that anyone can imagine what it is like to become a parent. Everyone is probably very lucky to go through an "oh, this is going to be SOOOO wonderful" stage during pregnancy, even if you are expecting triplets! Because their is just no possible way to imagine what three newborn babies, all at once, requires. As a grandma of triplets, I know my mom is quite overwhelmed at the thought of the new triplets on the way this fall. With us, there was cautious optimism about how the schedule would pan out bringing three babies home. Now, we all know better! It's going to be beyond exhausting and harder than my sister and brother-in-law can possibly imagine. But, I am glad they can't picture it exactly yet... because that would just be mean. It is definitely a blessing that we cannot see into our futures and what God has planned. Dan and I would have never signed up for this past year willingly, but we are so glad we went through it. Our three precious miracles are worth every bit of lost sleep and stressful crying jags. We love them to pieces and would not have it any other way. I thank God every day that I get to be a mom, their mom. I just don't think I can add that this has been a picnic or easy. Thank goodness, because I can see how God is shaping me to become a better, stronger, more disciplined person.

Sorry about the long spiel, but I felt a little reflective there for a moment. On to the party!!

Last week, I spent all my free time cleaning and planning and getting ready for Saturday. Dan's mom, Deb, and her friend, Carol, came on Tuesday to help me clean. My mom and I cleaned all day on Friday and had lots of family help that night and the next day. Finally... it all came together. And I don't know why I stressed so much about the house! It was way too full of people to notice whether it was clean or not!

We had 74 people at our house on Saturday for the babies' birthday party! It was so exciting to see the turnout and fun to celebrate with everyone. We wanted to use the occasion to thank all of the wonderful people who helped us throughout the year, so we invited a ton of guests! We also included friends and family, so it turned into a big event of food and fun. I wish I had pictures of all the little kiddos running and playing in our backyard with the bubble wands and the kickball. The yard was also scattered with picnic tables full of people and food. Dan grilled up a storm and I manned the food table inside for a while. I eventually snuck a burger for myself and sat down with some of our guests and Dan eventually joined me. The kids seemed to soak up all the attention, and frankly, I hardly saw them all night! I am sure their feet only touched the ground so we could see their reaction to the grass. Otherwise, they were loved up all night. It was great.

We didn't plan any big events except for eating cake, and that turned out fine. We barely had time to talk to everyone during the party! David, Aria and Levi enjoyed their first birthday cupcakes and we have some pretty great pictures. At first, David didn't quite understand what was going on. He played a little in it. Then I tried to put a small piece of cake in his mouth. It was a new texture, so he promptly wiped it off his tongue with his upper lip. Then, I gave him a taste of frosting. That went over much better! He soon dug in and polished off quite a bit of his cupcake. Levi smashed it and started eating right away. Aria also did pretty well with getting into her cupcake. A cute moment was when we were trying to get their attention for pictures and they all did "so big!" at the same time. I am not sure if we got a good picture of that moment yet. I am sure it's on video.

My sister and brother-in-law got to "skype" in from Colorado for the cake debacle. So, I guess you could say there were 76 people there... or even 79 if you count the three babies she is carrying!! That may be stretching it. Oh, I guess the official count is 75 if you want to count unborn babies that were at our house!

I go off the subject way too easily...

After cake was cleaned up, we sent David, Aria and Levi off to the bathtub with some willing caretakers and we served cake to their guests. The babies got back just in time to help rip open their first cards and present, then they were done with the presents. It was bedtime, and if you know Levi, you know he missed the whole show. If you know Aria, you can guess that she got cuddled and fell asleep with someone holding her. It's her favorite! And of course you know that David was NOT having anything to do with anything resembling sleep as long as there was a party going on at his house! I am pretty sure he got to eat his Grandpa Dave's ice cream, got tossed in the air a few hundred times, rode on the tractor, rode in the truck, played in the grass, played with/by cousin Will, and a list of other fun things. He was partying it up. I guess he is my son! He may look like Dan, but he has my everylasting energy when there are people to see!

We were blessed with so many wonderful gifts at the party! Thanks everybody! We got TONS of cute clothes for the summer. Their wardrobes are fully stocked now. And we got lots of fun outdoor toys so we don't have to be cooped up in the livingroom anymore! We are going to spend time in the water this summer and have all the toys to do it! Yay! Mommy is going to get a tan! No more glare off of Mommy's legs! Ha ha.

Well, it has been a half an hour since Dan disappeared upstairs, so I suppose I should wrap this up for tonight. I will add some pictures and call it good. I am hoping to post again on Thurday - the actual birthday so we'll see how it goes! Thanks everyone who came and celebrated the lives of David, Aria and Levi! They are so special to us and it is heart-warming to see how special they are to all of you too!

The TOTALLY awesome birthday cake! I wish I knew the name of it's maker from Sioux Falls to give her credit. Thanks, Donna, for the cool cake!

Exhausted Aria... all partied out!

Guess who is...

crawling?? It's Aria!! She is a crawler as of today! I thought it would never happen. I even talked to the nurse about it two weeks ago and she suggested we might look into whether she would need physical therapy. I guess not!! We just have to be patient with our little girl who does things in her own time! I've been trying to get good video all afternoon, but she isn't cooperating yet. But we are having fun anyway! Yay for milestones!

Happy Happenings

My David... what a delight this little boy is! He is learning so much all the time. He has the biggest, best belly laugh in the world. No one can hear him laugh without laughing too. He loves to show us "soooo big" and clicks his tongue whenever anyone else does. He often leads the way for games at meal time. Whenever one baby bangs on the tray, wipes their hands across the trail, yells, saying dada, or other various noises, the others follow quickly in the game. They are constantly watching each other for something to mimic. (Uh oh!) David loves bananas and will now say "nana" for anytime he wants food. He is also good at dada and will say it whenever I ask him to say mama. He only says mama when he's crying to get out of his crib.

David is crawling FAST anywhere we will allow him to go. He will pull himself up on anything that doesn't move, or maybe some that do. David will crawl over to anyone who enters the room and reach up to be picked up and visit with them. He is so friendly! I call him my little hip-hugger lately because he will follow me everywhere I go and cry for me to pick him up. He immediately wants back down, but it's not long till he begs to be in your arms again. He is the same way if you are sitting in the same room as you. There is a world to see if he can just crawl a little higher up your body.

David is working on the concept of "NO BITE!" About once a day, he tests to see if that is still the rule. Unfortunately, Levi had six teeth marks in his shoulder and a sad story to tell me today because of David. Grandma Deb still gets nervous when David bares those teeth, as he once dug them in to what I shall refer to as upper thigh area. Uncle Josh about fell over laughing when got to witness the incident.

David teaches me new things ever day... the broom closet still needs baby proofed, the chair will no longer count as a baby gate (if he can't crawl through the crack, he will stand up and shimmy through it), the changing table is easily dismantled in two minutes, he knows how to dial a telephone, dining room chairs don't count as a baby obstacle anymore, and even if I open up the entire main floor for him to explore, he will just want to go to the corner I have barricaded the plants in. He is quite stubborn and does not care for the word "no." Too bad for him I think his tantrums are kind of cute and don't illicit a change of heart from me. I constantly have to remind him that I'm the Mommy and I win.

Aria... my precious peanut of a girl. She feels like a feather after hauling around her brothers. She is very vocal and likes to try a lot of new sounds. She is very good at saying "hi", but only when she feels like it. I took her to her Uncle Doug's choir concert and she tried singing along with one of the songs. I was hoping everyone around me wasn't annoyed, but no one seemed to notice. She was awesome otherwise throughout the whole thing.

Aria is a great eater, but usually doesn't eat quite as much as Levi. I would say she is a better eater than David. None of this is reflected in their sizes. Weird. Aria is gumming all her food with only two teeth on the bottom, but it doesn't seem to slow her down at all.

Aria is getting quite proficient at the Army crawl. She will use her elbows and one leg to get across the floor now. Every once in a while we see her up on all fours, so one day she will crawl. We have got to work on some upper body strength. Her arms are little noodles. Finally, she is getting to the sitting position on her own. She started that a couple weeks ago. I have babies who are much more content now that they can get where they want and sit (or stand) when they get there. It's wonderful.

Aria is friendly and such a girl. She smiles and coos and woos wherever she goes. She waves all the time! It must mean she likes something because she starts waving at me when I start singing her favorite songs. She also claps. I have my won cheering section whenever I whip out "The Itsy Bitsy Spider."

Aria and David currently share a room, and Levi is on his own. People often wonder why the boys aren't together, with Aria in her own room. This is because she is such a great sleeper. She usually sleeps through most of the boys' commotion, and if she does wake up, just puts herself back to sleep without a peep. Levi is the lighter sleeper of the boys and is noisier when waking, so he's in the single room. Aria is my cuddler and will still let me rock her to sleep if I want. David and Levi... they know what you are up to and want nothing to do with being put to sleep. They haven't quite figured out that they would get to "stay up" longer if I just got to hold them. But, they kick, crawl, and cry until they are laid down in bed. This is fine, since it makes bedtime that much faster and easier. Aria still loves her paci, her blanky and her mommy at sleepy time. Fine with me!

Levi is our content little man. He is a great baby. He plays by himself so well, and yet is so entertaining when others want to play with him. Levi will roll the balls around on our wood floor and make David laugh and laugh. I HAVE to get a video of that soon and post it. They had Kayla and Shari Kooiker in laughter-tears today. He has learned to crawl and pull himself up. I had no idea he also knew how to climb stairs until I was playing the piano the other day and his voice sounded like it was coming from a higher elevation (our piano is up against the stairs/banister). I stood up and there he was - five steps up! Whoops! He is learning new things quickly. It's so fun to watch.

Levi is my best eater. I can't think of anything he has turned down. Dan about gagged when Levi and Aria ate my potato salad. Nothing could be worse to Dan than the combination of cold potatoes, eggs, onions, mustard and miracle whip. He'll probably gag reading that. Anyway, Levi and Aria loved it. David only tolerated it a little bit and was done. Sometimes it seems like Levi is a bottomless pit for food and will let me know when he is NOT done. If I set a baby food container down (usually to reach for a different one) he will whine/cry until he sees I still have food and a spoon and still plan on feeding him more.

My favorite thing about Levi right now is his "new" smile. He will squint his eyes closed, wrinkle his nose up and bare all four of his teeth in an ear to ear cheesefest of a grin. It's awesome! I can't seem to get a picture of it, because any regular bloggy readers could tell you about Levi's distain for cameras. That, and I have been the WORST picture taker lately. I hardly have any. Hence, the lack of blogging. Gasp!

I think Levi is the tallest of the three kiddos, just by a little. They all have long torsos, but Levi has longer legs too. It will be so interesting to see how they grow and change, but for the record, and the growing and changing can slow down around here. Sheesh! I have to watch out that I don't hit dangling legs or protruding heads on walls and doorways when carrying my tall children to and from bed. I have a feeling they are going to have the problem of always being expected to behave more maturely than their age would suggest because of their height. People will assume they are older. I was always thought to be older than I was, and I didn't have NEARLY the height advantage of Dan. Hmmm. I wonder what his thought on this would be. I digress...

The only issue Levi has right now is he gets stuck. He will stand up somewhere until he wears out all enjoyment of that location. But then he's usually stuck. He will start crying for me to come get him because he isn't confident in his getting down skills yet. He would probably be better, but twice he has hit his chin getting down from the piano bench and had bloody gums. That was hard on his mama who didn't get to him fast enough to help when he "asked." Otherwise, I hardly hear from him. I have to make a conscious effort everyday to play with him individually, since he hardly crawls all over me like his brother. Levi is low maintenance. He even "asks" to go to bed. He'll stick his thumb in his mouth and say "tie-tie" which, in our house, means tired. Then we know to take him in and lay him down and he's out. I know some mothers out there are wishing their babies knew that trick, and when he starts giving lessons, I'll let you know. David is going to be his first student!

As for Dan and I, we are doing pretty well. Life is so busy with three 11 month olds and getting ready for a big, birthday bash around here. Work is busier than I've ever seen if for Dan, he went back to help his dad farm last weekend, and is helping my aunt Donna with some remodeling at her house. I think he thinks his plate is full. Too bad it was already full with us four!! We are looking forward to seeing lots of family and friends for the 1st birthday party in a couple weekends. I am trying to keep up with the kiddos and the house. Mostly, I just get kids taken care of. It's hard to do spring cleaning when one barely gets dishes and laundry done every day. I COULD skip my morning nap with the kiddos, but it's not going to happen people. Whatever the trio decides to give me for naps in the afternoon will have to do for devoting to the house. If you are wondering why there is a lack of posting on the blog, just come visit! If I get the computer out at all, David and Levi come over to try and pound on the keys. If I go behind the baby gate to check email quick, David stands at the gate crying until I come back to within reach. It's quite ridiculous.

Now that you've had to read three pages, single space, of blah-ging I will leave you with some pictures. The selection is meager, but now that the camera is no longer living in the van, I should have more soon. And if you judge me about all the pictures of us in our pajamas, please feel free to come get us all dressed for no one in particular, do my laundry and put it back away please. (I do try to get outfits on us for Dan's benefit, but obviously it's not always on the top of the to-do list for the day. My friend who feels bad about a picture of her daughter without shoes shouldn't scroll past this point of the blog, lest she feel like mother of the year!)

Outfits! The first time the boys are wearing their capris... ahem... I mean shorts for the spring! (I like to mock guys who wear "shorts" past their knees and still call them shorts.) We have some growing into them to do!

Aria with a toy on her cute little head. They all LOVE to stick their heads in some buckets we have and play peek-a-boo or just yell. They love to hear their voices echo.

Playing with Kara's sunglasses.

Kara and Aria matched on Sunday!

Uncle Doug matched the boys. This is David. Unfortunately, we didn't get a picture with Levi too. He was busy playing with all his other friends at church. They get passed around alot. :D We love it.

David in Daddy's hat.

What Aria does with her milk if left alone with the bottle. See all the little, white speckles?

David~"Gimme that phone, dada!"

David's new trick in avoiding nap time... checking out what's happening in the backyard. I couldn't figure out why he quieted down so fast the other day. I saw light coming out of the room (it was dark even though the flash went off and lit it all up) so I peeked in and there he was! He explores everything.

Now I know there are not many photos of Levi... I always try to keep it as even as possible. But, he was the star of the last video post, so I am going to relieve my guilt with that statement. Ta ta for now!

Levi Discovers Donna's Mirror

We were trying to record Levi's unique inch-worm crawl and he worked himself down the hall. He found a friend!! It was Levi in the mirror. I don't think he understood when to stop though, cause he bonks his head three times. He eventually got it though. David wanted in on the action too. Levi was so giddy! He had the best time with that mirror.

Grandparents' blogpost...

Guess what! We got to spend 12 days with our Grandpa and Grandma Rigsby in Gillette over Easter. We also had a lot of people come by and help out while we were there. We love seeing everyone and no one is a stranger. Aunt Mimi stayed with us two days while Grandma worked. Great-Grandpa Dickey came by along and Rosemary Shober helped with feeding time. Great-Grandpa and Grandma Rigsby also came in the afternoon to visit.
Aunt Mimi was so fun and we loved entertaining her. She bought us a new toy and Levi loves it. Aria cries when the song says Ye-Haw and David doesn’t like it at all.

Here is a picture of Levi riding our new rocking horse.

While we were there the first weekend, we celebrated Aunt Mimi’s birthday and saw lots of people at her party. Boy were we exhausted at the end of that day because we weren’t able to get a very good nap that day.
Aunt Jessica and Uncle James were here that weekend and we played with them and their big dog. Jet is a black lab and so lovable it was fun for Aria to climb on him.

Uncle James let us help him with his computer. We fully expect to be computer savvy by the time we are two years old.

Uncle Doug and Kara were with us for the weekend also. They brought along Aunt Donna, Aunt Kristi and our cousin Ryan. I guess they weren’t there to see us though. They came to help Aunt Mimi celebrate her birthday. It was comforting to see someone familiar. Uncle Doug thought it was time to teach David to walk so he put him behind the walking toy and off he went.

This all happened in the first few days we were there. By Monday morning we all had a bad cold and didn’t feel too well so we slept and rested for the rest of the week. Grandma and Grandpa Rigsby stayed home with us on Wednesday, Thursday and Friday. We had fun sitting in Grandpa’s hand, playing with our toys and getting to do things Mom and Dad never let us do.

Finally Mom and Dad showed up and we were so happy to see them. I guess it was Saturday afternoon. We played with them and then the next day we went to church all dressed up in our new Easter outfits. We came home and ate lunch and all of a sudden it was packing time again and into the van we went to return home to our own beds.

This is what Grandma and Grandpa's house looked like the whole time we were there.

Grandpa Rigsby said he cried when we left because he had so much fun having us there. We were sad that he wasn’t coming home with us but we are looking forward to him visiting us when we have a birthday party for turning “1” year old. That will be a blast.!!!

Nothing Fancy

We mostly have pictures for this post. It was a busy week getting back in routine here at home. It was my brother, Doug's birthday last week so we celebrated with him. We have fun videos of Levi and I'll try to see if they will load. On Sunday, we had most of Dan's family here, except for his youngest brother Jonny, and our soon-to-be sister-in-law, Maggie. We missed them! The guys played a round of golf and the gals played with babies! David, Aria and Levi had lots of fun playing with everyone and got Easter baskets from Grandma and Grandpa. I have a picture of them in their outfits.

Here are the kiddos one morning... a picture of each of them. Aren't they gorgeous?

Yesterday, the boys were wearing their new Easter outfits from the Kooikers. I had to have a picture, besides the fact that they were all eating their bottles so well!

We took off David's hat after a walk and this is what we found!

At Doug's birthday party, here some of us hanging out:
